I live in chronic pain, it’s usually my joints but now my nerves are involved. My tests are all normal, and my doctor gives me Celebrex, Vicodin and Flexeril. I feel doped up, and still live in pain. What else can I do? –B.C., Sanibel Island, Florida

Answer: Avoid eating a certain class of foods known to ignite pain in the muscles, joints and nerves. Some of you can guess which foods I’m talking about here, especially if you grew up in tropical regions of the United States, where your summer camp counselor told you to avoid the wild berries of deadly nightshade, which contain belladonna. Nightshades belong to the Solenaceae family and I bet you eat a nightshade food each day.

The most common are tomatoes, white potatoes (not sweet potatoes or yams), potato starch is found in hundreds of medications; eggplant, and peppers (including all those deliciously spicy peppers like cayenne, chili, and habenero). Tabasco sauce, which contains large amounts of heat-causing “capsicum annum,” ranks up there. Paprika is a sneaky one, showing up in flavoring mixes or under “added spices” on the label. Other nightshades include goji berries (bummer, they’re the latest rage in the antioxidant crowd), ashwagandha, Cape gooseberries, ground cherries, and garden huckleberries (thankfully not blueberries). We all know cigarettes cause cellular damage, but they are also a nightshade!

These all cause pain! If you don’t believe me, have a full-on nightshade “party” and load the salsa on your breakfast omelet, have French fries with lunch, and for dinner, eat eggplant parmesan with some stir-fry peppers and tomatoes. NSAIDs anyone? Because all those nightshades are sure to cause a flare-up for you, necessitating non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The flare-up could take 3 hours to 3 days to occur, so connecting the dots is tricky. If you are sensitive to weather changes, this could be a sign of nightshade sensitivity, don’t ask me why.

So what’s the problem with some our favorite farmer’s market heroes? Well, nightshades contain alkaloids that accumulate and block an enzyme called “cholinesterase” lighting the body’s pain fuse: Muscle spasm, aches, joint pain, tenderness, hip pain, inflammation, and stiff movement. Heartburn too! And you thought heartburn was related to a Prilosec-deficiency, didn’t you? While symptoms may dissipate in a few days or weeks if there is no more consumption, the problem is that we keep eating nightshades in almost every meal. The body never gets clear of them so it stays ‘on fire’ 24/7 despite all your pain-relievers.

If you’re otherwise healthy, eat up! But if live in chronic pain, or have Rheumatoid arthritis, try completely eliminating nightshades for 3 solid months. Hang in there because it takes a few weeks before the pain even begins to retreat. I’ve read anecdotal reports where some people kiss pain goodbye forever, just by avoiding nightshades. Can you imagine? Complete pain relief, it costs nothing and the only downside is an occasional craving.

I had such a bad reaction to eating hazelnuts that I required a shot, and some steroids. I don’t eat much nuts, sometimes cashews. Do you think I’m allergic to all nuts? –C.J., Coral Springs, Florida

Answer: You should avoid other nuts too, I’ll tell you which in a minute. Luckily, you didn’t have full-blown anaphylaxis which occurs in about one third of all tree nut ingestions, especially with peanuts, which by the way are actually legumes. It shocks me that airlines still serve peanuts to passengers -hundreds of people at a time- when there is such an incredibly high sensitivity rate!

The allergic response is triggered by the proteins found in the nuts, which do not break down with heat, meaning you can’t cook them out. Nuts are often “hidden” too, so they may only get honorable mention in popular foods such as cookies, protein bars, cakes, cereals, nut spreads, praline and other desserts. Also, if the label says, “This product was manufactured in a facility that also uses nuts….” that’s your cue to put the product back because there are traces of nut proteins that may have blown around the facility and made it into your particular food during handling or manufacturing.

Some folks only experience a mild problem with nuts, and it’s limited to irritations of the mouth, lips, tongue or throat. This is called “OAS” for oral allergy syndrome, or sometimes “Pollen Food Allergy.” Clinically, we see this most frequently in people allergic to weeds because the body sees the pollen traces in the nut. Birch pollens are sometimes to blame in OAS, which can occur any time of the year, but usually during pollen season. The cross sensitivity can occur between birch and other nuts as well as plums, pears, cherries, apples, carrots, peas and sunflower seeds.

I found a study that measured human IgE antibodies in order to evaluate cross-sensitivities. Among tree nuts, there is a strong cross reaction between walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts. So none of those for you!

There’s a moderate cross reaction with these: Pistachio, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews and Brazil nuts. Of the bunch, cashews and pistachios are pretty tightly correlated, so if you’re allergic to one, definitely stay away from the other. I’d avoid the bunch honestly, and consider a blood test to determine food allergies.

One more warning, about my favorite “nut” which I hardly ever eat but still fantasize about. Cashews, they are really seeds, not nuts. If you’re highly allergic to poison ivy, stay away from these guys. Even the “raw cashews” you see at health food stores are not truly raw. You simply cannot eat a raw cashew, it must be separated from it’s double-shell. In a pain-staking process it’s steamed and/or boiled but, the outer shell contains urushiol, a toxic resin that sparks the familiar skin rash after exposure to poison ivy, oak and sumac! If you have a severe allergy to poison ivy, raw cashews should probably not be consumed, otherwise eat one for me!

The most wonderful thing about our planet is that it grows good medicine. Making herbal teas is one of my secret passions. You can drink teas, and in some cases apply them to your skin. I’ve been playing with herbs for years, it’s fun and I honestly think it’s a wonderful adjunct to your other medical treatments.

Here are the basics. Use 1 tablespoon of herbs per cup of water. Consider brew time, you will lose some health benefits over brewing certain herbs. An “infusion” is best when using delicate parts of the plant, like the leaves, flowers and aromatic aerial portions (I’m thinking rose petals or wood betony). Infusing means you steep the herbs in hot water for 20 to 30 minutes, as opposed to simmering them. Some herbs take a cold water infusion versus boiled water.

Roots, bark or seeds are tougher parts of the plant and therefore, require a “decoction.” You simmer them for 20 to 45 minutes in gently boiling water.

Experiment with combinations of various herbs to find the best taste and physiological effect. Herbs are medicine so research what you learn today, make sure they are safe for you. It’s amazing that some herbal teas improve heart rhythm, reduce blood pressure, clear brain fog or ease hormonal concerns. Most herbal teas are safe for people with kidney stones. My favorite book on teas is Rosemary Gladstar’s “Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health.”

Health food stores sell herbs, or look online, or google “herbal apothecary.” I insist on organic herbs. Here’s a recipe for “Tummy Tea.” I make this in bulk so “1 part” equals one cup. Mix all the herbs together in a big container. When you actually make the tea, put one tablespoon (total herb) per 1 cup of hot water. You can make a few cups at a time, and store in the fridge.

I took the stool test you recommended called “GI Effects” by Metametrix Labs, and it’s positive for high levels of a bacteria called H. Pylori. My doctor is treating me aggressively since it causes ulcers and stomach cancer. I’m so glad you recommended this test, it sheds light on all my symptoms.! What natural supplements can help? –S.N., Gainesville, Florida

Answer: Awesome, it’s great to hear good feedback, and that you’ve discovered the underlying cause of your pain. Nothing bugs me more than people getting treated with 17 different antibiotics and long-term acid blockers, which may help temporarily but tend to wreak a lot of havoc in some individuals because of the drug mugging effect and high incidence of intestinal hyperpermeability (termed leaky gut). Most people take a breath test to find H. pylori, you don’t necessarily need a stool test.

Lots of you reading this are infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and don’t know it because you only associate with ulcers, reflux, bloating, nausea or a deep gnawing pain in your stomach. Oh no, there are many more symptoms, including frequent belching (it’s almost uncontrollable), a change in appetite (usually reduced), unexplained weight loss, joint or muscle pain, chronic fatigue and lots of psychological symptoms. Seriously, the bug best known for causing gastric and duodenal ulcers can also mess with your head. H. pylori can put you in a brain fog where you feel like you can’t figure anything out, make clear decisions or concentrate well. It can even contribute to depression.

Now, what are you going to do since you’ve been diagnosed with H. pylori infection. Follow your physician’s advice, and discuss all my suggestions below. Ask him about the following natural treatments, in no particular order:

Mastic gum- Shown in a 2010 Phytomedicine study to eradicate H. pylori, the researchers used 350 milligrams three times daily for 14 days.

Cranberry juice- not the sugary beverages, I mean pure cranberry juice (or supplements). You can make your own at home too.

Probiotics- These supplements don’t eradicate H. pylori but restoring your friendly microflora reduces colonization of bad bacteria. I’d supplement, versus eating yogurt.

Coconut Oil- This contains “monolaurin,” a natural anti-fungal and anti-microbial; this is a totally harmless approach to help eradicate H. pylori. Include about two teaspoons a day in your diet.

Broccoli sprouts- They contain “sulforaphane” compounds which repair gastric mucosa even after it’s been damaged by H. pylori. A 2011 study suggests broccoli sprouts helps reduce risk of H. pylori induced gastric cancer. Also, in Cancer Prevention Research 2009, researchers concluded that “Daily intake of sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprouts for two months reduces H. pylori colonization…” There is no correlation with alfalfa sprouts. Health food stores sell broccoli extracts called “I3C” and another version called “DIM.”

Oregano and garlic- two spices you should cook with to your hearts content. You can also buy supplements of “Oregano Oil” and “Aged Garlic Extract” if you want a more potent dose.
